Dcoop Group reduces the carbon footprint of its industries by 24,589 tons of CO2e in one year
BackThe aim is to reduce the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by its industrial activity by verifying it through accredited entities
Dcoop Group has reduced its carbon footprint by 26.59 % in one year, equivalent to 24,589 tons of CO2e, mainly in the industrial field of all its facilities.
According to the categories of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) established by the standard and their level of significance in the context of the Dcoop Group, the data is analyzed by distinguishing between direct emissions and indirect emissions (derived from internal transportation (employee mobility), upstream transportation of materials (shipping), downstream transportation of products (distribution) and the purchase of goods).
The result of the calculation for the period 2022 is that the carbon footprint of the Dcoop Group reaches a value of 92,457.96 tons of CO2e, 26.59% lower than that obtained in 2021 (first year analyzed) of 117,047.17 tons of CO2e.
After analyzing the year 2022, it can be deduced that 18% of emissions correspond to direct emissions derived from fuel consumption in stationary sources (boilers and generators) and in vehicle fleets and to fluorinated gas leaks in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; 9% to indirect emissions derived from electricity consumption; 8% originated by transportation (employee commuting and freight transport) and the majority of emissions, 65%, generated by purchased goods.
It should be noticed that emissions are directly affected by fluctuations in the organization's activity. For this reason, once absolute emissions have been analyzed, it is necessary to analyze emissions in relative terms.
In this regard, the Oil section has seen its emissions reduced by 54.41%, with 60,390.68 tons of CO2e emitted in 2021 compared to 27,530.99 tons of CO2e in 2022. The reduction of the carbon footprint by 62.88% with respect to the consumption of auxiliary materials (caps, boxes, labels, among others), decreasing from 52,054.54 tons of CO2e in 2021 and 19,319.80 tons of CO2e in 2022). Specifically, in 2022, initiatives aimed at reducing the grammage of plastic have been implemented and a significant percentage of plastic packaging has been replaced by glass packaging. It should be noted that the emissions associated with plastic production are more than double those generated by glass production.
It is important too the decrease in emissions in fuel consumption by trucks in the pomace section. Thus, from 2021 to 2022 it went from 156.79 tons of CO2e to only 2.87 tons of CO2e, or in other words, a significant decrease of 98.16 %.
In the Wines section, something similar occurs with fuel consumption in fixed installations. Thus, it has gone from 1,450.84 tons of CO2e in 2021 to 131.92 in the last year calculated, i.e. a 90.90 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Finally, in the Goat Milk section, emissions from fuel consumption in fixed installations have been reduced by 117.03 tons, or 26.05 %.
Commitment to sustainability
Dcoop Group, in its solid commitment to sustainability and in collaboration with Ecoterrae Global Solutions S.A., continues to work on calculating the carbon footprint of its industrial processes and implementing measures aimed at promoting sustainable actions that favor the gradual reduction of its carbon footprint in the medium term.
At the methodological level, the calculation has been successfully verified by SGS, in accordance with the UNE-EN ISO 14064-1:2019 referential, an international standard of recognized prestige that, in addition to providing rigor to the report, raises the level of demand by requiring a specific methodology to evaluate which indirect emissions are significant through the establishment of criteria that determine and justify their significance.
The Carbon Footprint was created as a measure to quantify and generate an indicator of the impact that an activity or process has on climate change. It is defined as the total Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted directly or indirectly by a product, service, organization or event and is expressed in tons of CO2 equivalent. GHGs accumulate in the atmosphere and retain part of the heat emitted by the Earth, thus contributing to global warming and climate change.
Dcoop continues to develop its initiative for economic, social and environmental sustainability to help reduce costs and meet consumer demand for quality products.
