About the fraud news

Back

As an olive oil cooperative, Dcoop defends the authenticity of olive oil in the sense that the bottles should only contain oil exclusively derived from olives, thereby supporting the work towards the quality of the Spanish olive oil sector.

Lately, we are facing strange situations that are signs of anomalous events from which it can be inferred that there is fraud:

-There have been moments in this campaign when the lampant oil (the oil that cannot be bottled due to its lower quality and therefore needs to be refined) has been much more expensive than refined oil (the lampante whose defects have been neutralized), despite the fact that this process has an industrial cost. This is outside of market logic. Lampante oil is produced in the mills and cannot be bottled due to its poor quality, so it needs to be refined. Once refined, it is mixed with virgin or extra virgin oil, and that is what is bottled as olive oil (plain).

-All oils have a composition of acids, but many of them are shared. For example, sunflower oil contains oleic acid, which is typical of table olives. The blending of different oils is very difficult to detect in a laboratory analysis. We have made studies and discovered that there are oils on the market with a majority of analytical parameters at the limit, which is impossible naturally and can only be explained by the mixing of different oils. The oil is within the standard, but with strange analytical values because they are at the limit, which doesn't occur naturally.

In no case are we talking about health risks, but rather about authenticity, purity, and ensuring that everything in a bottle of olive oil comes from olives. This is an economic fraud and a risk of losing the prestige of the healthiest fat that can be consumed.

We have been reporting these strange situations to the authorities for some time, as well as presenting them in the forums of sectorial organizations, but nothing has been done so far. We have indications, but no concrete evidence against any operator; something we would have reported, but what is clear is that this must be investigated, and the good image of Spanish olive oil must be defended.
